You could spend your whole trip to Las Vegas without stepping foot outside your hotel. Because there’s enough restaurants, bars, shops and entertainment to keep you fed, watered and wide-eyed around the clock. You can take a trip around the globe without leaving the Strip, too. The Eiffel Tower, New York’s skyscrapers, a giant Egyptian sphynx. They’re all here.
But you’re going to want to tear yourself away from the tables to see what else Nevada and nearby Arizona has going on. The Hoover Dam is only half an hour from Vegas and the Grand Canyon is doable in a day, too.
Where to stay in Las Vegas
There’s only one place for Sin City first-timers and it’s the Las Vegas Strip. If you want to be slap-bang in the middle of the action, the mid-Strip area is where it’s at. This is where you’ll find the real big-hitters, like the Bellagio, Mirage, Wynn, Venetian, Harrah’s and Bally’s. Along with a heap of nice restaurants.
Up at the northern end of Las Vegas Boulevard, aka the Strip, you’ll get more bang for your buck. It’s quieter, too. The STRAT Hotel (you might know it as the Stratosphere) is home to the tallest freestanding tower in the US. You can watch people jumping off the top (attached to a bungee cord, don’t worry) while you sunbathe.
And there are some great family-friendly options to the south of the strip, like Medieval-themed Excalibur and the Egyptian-style Luxor Hotel. Plus, you’ll be closer to the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada sign, which is handy.

- Catch the Bellagio fountain show. The show starts every half an hour during the day and every 15 minutes after 8pm. It’s a popular one so make sure to get there in time to grab a good spot on the sidewalk.
- Book to see a show. Adele to Britney, J-Lo to Janet Jackson – they’ve all had residencies in Vegas. Cirque du Soleil and the Blue Man Group are also usually in town. Failing that, Circus Circus puts on an acrobatic performance every day, and it won’t cost you a dime!
- Take a day trip to the Hoover Dam. Ok, it’s not Vegas, but trust us, it’s worth leaving the Strip behind. Hire a car, or book onto an organised tour, to see the humongous hydroelectric power plant that straddles the Colorado River.
Insider tips for visiting Las Vegas
- The Las Vegas Strip is a lot longer than you think, especially in the heat. It’s 4.2 miles in total, so getting from one end to the other can take well over an hour on foot. Pack your comfiest trainers and don’t rule out the monorail.
- Vegas doesn’t have to be a blow-out trip. And you don’t have to stay in the pricier hotels to check out their attractions. You can walk into the casinos, ride the rollercoasters, visit the flamingos and see the shows for free.
- Don’t spend all your time on the Strip. We know, it’s tempting. But you can’t leave without visiting Fremont Street. Street performers, music and a neon museum give you a taste of old-school Vegas. And the zipline and LED light show bring things up to date.
