You won’t find many bucket lists that don’t mention the Amalfi Coast. I mean the whole place was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 – need we say anymore? This 50-kilometre stretch of coastline in Italy’s Campania region is one of the prettiest places you’ll clap eyes on. Picture pastel-painted houses, vineyards and lemon groves clinging to cliffs that roll down to the turquoise sea.
The rollercoaster-like road hugs the cliffs and takes you past some of Italy’s cutest towns. You’ve got glam Positano, hilltop Ravello and bustling Amalfi. They each have their own charms. But, as a general rule, you’ll be spending your time sunbathing, shopping, sailing and indulging in a Spritz… or three. All while admiring some of the best views in the world.
Where to stay in the Amalfi Coat
You’ve got your pick of pretty-as-a-picture villages and towns to stay on the Amalfi Coast. Positano, Amalfi and Ravello are probably three of the most popular.
Positano is pricey. It’s a celeb hotspot, so there are plenty of fancy hotels. And even the ‘cheaper’ hotels will cost you an arm and a leg. But the views are something else. And you can spend your days wandering narrow bougainvillea-draped streets and sipping limoncello in a beach bar.
Amalfi’s one of the bigger towns, so it’s got a good mix of guesthouses and affordable hotels. Its head-turning Duomo shouldn’t be missed. Ravello is perched high above Amalfi. It’s slightly more peaceful up here, compared to the coastal spots.
But if you want more bang for your buck and a beach stay, look up Minori, or Mairoi – the latter’s home to the biggest beach on the Amalfi Coast. And another option is to stay in Sorrento and visit for the day.
Top things to do in the Amalfi Coast
- Set sail on a boat tour from Amalfi. You’re going to want to see the Amalfi Coast from its famous shoreline. You can head out on boat trips from Amalfi, taking you past celeb villas and hush-hush beaches.
- Catch a concert in Ravello. Villa Rufolo is a must-visit any time, thanks to its stunning views and beautifully designed gardens. But, in the summer, they host concerts here – all set on a stage overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
- Spend the day in Positano. This isn’t your average beach town. Its shops are famous for their linen clothes and handmade sandals. And you can get lunch served to your sunbed at the swanky beach club.
Insider tips for visiting the Amalfi Coast
- Be a passenger. It might sound like a great place to hire a car. But the traffic’s rubbish, the bends are hairpins, and you want to be looking at the views, not the sat-nav. So it’s best to book a bus trip.
- Visit out of season, if you can. Like most places, July and August are peak times. And when we say it gets busy, we mean it gets BUSY. If you visit in early spring or late fall, you’ll still be looking at good weather, with more space to sprawl.
- Did you know there’s a fjord right in the middle of the Amalfi Coast? The town’s called Furore and it’s got a teeny-tiny beach, which you can reach via 200 steps.
