Ditching the passport doesn’t mean ditching the fun. The UK is absolutely top-tier for spring getaways, especially when the weather decides to play ball. Head up to the Lake District for proper hikes that end in cosy pubs, or pack up the car for a family getaway down in Cornwall before the summer crowds descend. It’s prime time for coastal walks, dragging the dog across the moors in Yorkshire, or just wandering around pretty villages eating your weight in cream teas. From grabbing cheap hotels in spring near the Cotswolds to finding a city base in Edinburgh for a weekend of castle-spotting, there are endless places to visit in spring right on our doorstep.
If you fancy a quick hop over the channel, spring weekend getaways to Europe are a massive win. You get to skip the sweaty summer queues and actually see the sights without melting into the pavement. Rome is elite in April. You can carb-load on fresh pasta outside the Pantheon with just a light jacket. Or you could grab a cheap flight to Barcelona for tapas, quirky architecture, and early evening drinks by the marina. For something a bit different, Budapest is brilliant for soaking in outdoor thermal baths while the air is still crisp. And because we do late deals better than anyone, you can easily lock in cheap spring break destinations across the continent with just a few taps.
Summer might still be hitting the snooze button, but that doesn’t mean you can’t catch a few rays right now. If you’re craving serious heat in March, April, or May, you just need to know where to look. Tenerife and the wider Canary Islands are basically cheating the system, offering proper t-shirt weather and prime conditions for spring beach holidays while everyone back home is still scraping ice off their windscreens. Further east, Cyprus is already warming up nicely for long afternoons by the pool, and Malta offers a brilliant mix of boat trips and cobbled streets in the sunshine.
You don’t have to empty your bank account to get a decent change of scenery. If you’re hunting for a cheap spring holiday, northern cities like Liverpool and Newcastle are legendary for brilliant nights out, free museums, and very reasonably priced pints. For something greener, swap the pricey southern coasts for the rugged beaches of Northumberland. You get massive stretches of sand to yourself, cracking seafood, and plenty of cheap hotels in spring if you book a little out of town. Blackpool is also an absolute classic for budget-friendly fun. Arcade games, rollercoasters, and fish and chips on the promenade never get old.
Eastern Europe is the ultimate cheat code for cheap spring break destinations. Krakow in Poland is incredibly easy on the wallet, packed with history, and full of cellar bars where the drinks cost a fraction of what you’d pay back home. Prague is another belter. The architecture is out of this world, and going in spring means you dodge the massive summer tourist swarms while still enjoying cheap local beers by the river. If you want something slightly warmer, Lisbon in Portugal still offers brilliant value for money. Grab a pastel de nata, hop on a yellow tram, and enjoy one of the best affordable spring getaways going.
Massively. Summer is peak season, meaning airlines and hotels know they can hike up the prices because everyone is trying to get away while the kids are off school. By booking spring holidays, you’re travelling in what the travel industry calls the ‘shoulder season’. It’s that sweet spot where the weather is actually getting decent, but the prices haven’t skyrocketed yet. In fact, you’ll find much better deals on flights, food, and accommodation in spring.
If you just want to escape the noise and actually hear yourself think, skip the major capitals and head somewhere a bit more low-key. In the UK, the Scottish Highlands are unbeatable for pure peace and quiet. Rent a car, drive around the lochs, and enjoy having massive glens entirely to yourself. Over in Europe, Ljubljana in Slovenia is one of the most chilled-out cities on the continent. It’s small, incredibly green, and completely stress-free. Alternatively, look at Menorca for quiet spring beach holidays. It’s the sleepiest of the Balearic Islands, offering quiet fishing villages and hidden coves without the thumping nightlife of its noisy neighbours.
